Attention refers to how we actively process specific
information present in our environment, in other words, focusing on a certain
thing despite the surroundings. An example of this is focusing our senses on
someone speaking and not noticing changes in the things around.
Attention can easily trick
us, by not making us see obvious things as we are focusing on another process.
In the example above, we are focusing our attention on someone speaking. Behind
him a man dressed up like a penguin can go behind him, and as we are not
focusing on the surroundings, only on the person speaking we will not notice
the penguin. Because of this we can say that attention
is limited as we can only focus on one thing at a time. We focus on what counts
so attention works like a spot light.
